Understanding the need for quality Trauma care and Trauma relief centre in Nepal, National Trauma Centre was established as the first and only Trauma Hospital of Nepal. It has provided its undivided attention and services to patients at the time of Massive Earthquake (2015) of Nepal. It is well prepared for mass causality of trauma victims.

According to Traffic Directorate, Nepal Police (2013), fatalities per 10,000 vehicles 11.75 fatalities were recorded and injury to fatality ratio was 6.60. This called for a well equipped and staffed centre to provide specialized care for patients suffering from major traumatic injuries. Thus, the primary aim of the hospital is to work as a single unit to reduce the likelihood of death or permanent injuries and disabilities among the patients. The hospital works as a referral tertiary centre towards treatment, resuscitation, rehabilitation and care of traumatic patients.

National Trauma Centre (NTC), a public hospital, is situated in the centre of capital city, Kathmandu, Nepal. It is just opposite the famous Mahankal Temple, near NewRoad. The hospital can be easily distinguished with its ten storeyed building in red and beige color. The hospital houses twelve departments, five major operation theatres and one emergency. The departments in our hospital include Orthopedic, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Spine surgery, Burn and plastic surgery, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Pathology, Otolaryngology, Thoracic and Vascular surgery, Dental, and Faciomaxillary departments. The mandatory posting of Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Radiology and Anesthesiology residents of NAMS for trauma care has added extra strength to this hospital.

There are around 350 staffs currently working to provide quality care medical services at nominal cost. It has total sanctioned beds of 200 of which for general there are 150 beds, 11 for ICU, 7 for postup and 32 for emergency. The quality care of critical trauma patients requiring multidisciplinary approach has become possible with the immense support by faculty of Bir Hospital,NAMS in various departments for skilled manpower.

The Trauma centre and its accomplishments is a result of effort, collaboration, and cooperation of Ministry of Health (Government of Nepal), Government of India, NAMS (National Academy of Medical Sciences, Bir Hospital) and our staffs. We have excelled in such short period of time due to endeavor and dedication of such remarkable people.

Our future plans include steps to extend fifteen more beds ICU, establish a well equipped red area in Emergency Room, initiate its own blood transfusion centre and provide MRI services. Our goal is to care for traumatic patients, and every single day we wish to touch upon the lives of various patients. We make it our priority to care for patients and ease their pain in ways possible.
